There are approximately 5 million blind in India. Many of those most in need receive primary eye care from non-medical ophthalmic clinical officers. We focus on these government employees as these are the first professionals for whom the neediest and poorest patients seek help from and most of whom do not receive regular professional updates and often work in poorly equipped clinics.
At HV Desai Eye Hospital in Pune, Maharashtra we conduct onsite teaching courses for ophthalmic clinical officers from the state of Maharashtra.
New partnerships in India
In addition to working with the HV Desai Eye Hospital we are pleased to announce that we have formed additional teaching partnerships with the PVRI (Pushpagiri Vitreo Retina Institute) in Hyderabad, Telangana and with the SSN (Sri Sankardeva Nethralaya) in Guwahati, Assam. These new partnerships will extend our reach in India considerably. In each centre we will conduct one on site and one distance learning course per year. These courses are directed at all those doing primary eye care but particularly those working in government clinics where they are the first to see the neediest patients
Our teaching covers all ophthalmic topics but the rapid increase in Diabetes (in India now 9% of the adult population) and of its sight threatening potential, has been a particular focus for our teaching.
We hope to extend our work in India as there is huge need there.
