There is a high prevalence of diabetes in the community.
In 2015 we formed a partnership with the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired which is the organisation in Belize responsible for eye care.
We were requested to help with the teaching of the treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
So far we have sent two teachers to teach and train local ophthalmic personnel with emphasis on laser photocoagulation treatment of the retina. Mr Michael Eckstein and Miss Teresa Sandinha have made visits in 2015 and 2016 respectively.  In 2016 we have enabled the visit of a Belezean ophthalmologist to visit two centres in the UK (Sunderland and Brighton) to further develop knowledge and confidence in the assessment and treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
